Increasingly, the U.S. is placing its trust in Omar Suleiman’s ability to serve as an intermediary between Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and those calling for democracy in the Arab world’s most populous nation.
But while Suleiman, the longtime intelligence chief and new Egyptian vice president, has long been a favorite of U.S. and Israeli officials, his animosity toward some in the Egyptian resistance may make it difficult to serve as a go-between.
According to reports out of the White House, the U.S. sees Suleiman as the best short-term solution, one in which there is both real change and political stability, a difficult job with virtually all sides calling for Mubarak to step down.
Typical of the effusive praise U.S. officials have lavished on Suleiman over the years is this excerpt from former CIA Director George Tenet, in his 2007 memoir, “At the Center of the Storm.”
“Omar Suleiman has been head of the Egyptian intelligence service for many years. A general as well as an intelligence chief, Umar is tall and regal looking, a very powerful man, very deliberate in his speech. He’s also tough and engaging. In a world filled with shadows, he is straight up and down,” Tenet stated as he wrote about the Middle East peace process.
“Umar has also done as much behind the scenes as anyone else I can think of to try to bring peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis,” he added.
“That was true when the United States was still engaged in the process. It’s even more so now that we are long gone from it. When nobody was trying to go see Hamas, when nobody was talking to the Palestinians, when nobody was talking to the Israelis, when nobody was pushing forward with innovative ideas to try to get people talking to each other, Umar was on the ground taking risks,” he continued.
At many of the meetings Tenet had with Suleiman, his then chief of staff, John Brennan, was present. Brennan, who learned Arabic in Cairo, is now President Obama’s highly trusted counterterrorism adviser and plays an increasingly larger role in National Security Council discussions on Egypt.
More recently, Suleiman was credited by U.S. and Israeli officials with keeping arms out of Gaza. Suleiman also often carried messages from Israel and the U.S. to Hamas.
The week before the revolt began in Cairo, in fact, Suleiman was quoted as warning Hamas that unless it released an Israeli soldier it would face serious consequences.
The Jerusalem Post reported on Jan. 29 that Suleiman warned Hamas that he expected “a massive operation” against Hamas in Gaza unless IDF soldier Gilad Schalit, held in Gaza for almost two years, is released.
While the U.S. and Israel trust him, there are indications that at least one party in the Egyptian opposition does not.
Mark Hosenball of Reuters reported this weekend that U.S. diplomatic documents published by WikiLeaks show that Suleiman has long sought to demonize the opposition Muslim Brotherhood in his contacts with skeptical U.S. officials.
According to a February 2006 diplomatic cable, Suleiman accused the Muslim Brotherhood of spawning “11 different Islamist extremist organizations, most notably the Egyptian Islamic Jihad and the Gama'a Islamiya (Islamic Group).″
The same month, in another cable, he is quoted as describing as “unfortunate” the Muslim Brotherhood’s success in recent parliamentary elections and suggesting Egypt needs new measures to restrain them.
Suleiman met this week with two representatives of the Muslim Brotherhood as part of a larger meeting with protest leaders and prominent Egyptians.
After Suleiman described the meeting as a productive negotiation, other participants denounced his account as a ploy to taint them as collaborators.
While U.S. officials quoted in the WikiLeaks cables admit the Muslim Brotherhood has among its membership “extremists both we and the Egyptian government oppose, Egyptian authorities have a long history of threatening us with the MB bogeyman.″
Who is Omar Suleiman? There's more in the video below from msnbc TV:
Columbia University Prof. Rashid Khalidi shares his insight on the newly-appointed vice president of Egypt.

So now our government has put its trust in the guy that heads up the secret police in Egypt. The guy who while he says he is negotiating with the demonstrators, is also hauling them off to places unknown. At the same time we lavish praise on this guy who has been one of great abusers of human rights.
This is a pretty dangerous time in Egypt, because the word's attention on it is fading, and if the people are unsuccessful in toppling the government, many will go to jail or be executed.
This is the plan of the Mubarek government. Pretend they are initiating change, hope the demonstrations stop, and restore the police state order using the secret police. Of course our government will be complicit in this as it is endorsed the leader of the secret police as the interim leader.
We wonder why our government is held in contempt in much of the world. We say we support democracy and human rights, but what we really support are thugs who promise us stability. It is so much easier to bribe and pay off a single dictator, than to deal with a country's population.
Just to be clear, this has been our policy for decades, its not a Dem or GOP issue.
Thank God and your government that they have apolice state and not a fanatic muslim country with enough arms to over run Isreal. The understanding that democrcy rings freedom everywhere is not true at all!! Many will distort this meaning of freedom for their own version of it. To let these terrorist thugs take control of such a beautiful and militarily dominant country would only bring more danger to our very own soil. I truly believe another attack on U.S. land will make people realize who and what king of crazies we are dealing with.
Well clearly there are no easy and obvious answers, and you argument is the other side.
Yes it is more unpredictable to put our trust in the people rather than dictators that rule with no regard for human rights. If we support free elections anyone could come to power, someone we like, or someone who is a threat. Hammas is a good example, not OUR choice for the Palestinians, but it was their choice.
However, we cant then say we are promoting human rights and freedom, its cynical and hypocritical. In dangerous parts of the world we support dictators we can bribe to do our bidding. It works until they throw the dictator out, and then we get the backlash for supporting the guy.
Meanwhile "our guy" is torturing and killing his people with our money, while we tell our people at home we stand for freedom.
Granted it is a messy world.
It is amazing that Obama could choose to support this ogre. Omar Suleiman looks and acts like Dr Death out of some grade B movie. You could just visualise him overseeing tortures and renditions with glee. It would all be a bad joke, except for the terrible consequences being imposed on the poor Egyptians.
Well stated Bill.
As for X-Agency, if we lived in a just world, then you and your family and friends, would be subject to arrest, torture, or disappearance at the hands of those whom you think it's OK for America to 'partner' with. But hey, life's not fair is it.
We trusted him to handle our rendition & torture work before, why would we stop now? Who else do we have in the wings that is so inclined in that way when we need it?
What is in the best interest of the United States in this situation?
The current administration desperately wants to stabilize the current unrest in Egypt, recognizing that once it spins beyond a point close at hand, they will be unable to exert any substantial influential power on the outcome. They view Omar Suleiman as their best hope .... in the short term.
They may be quite correct .. in the short term interest of the United States. But for this to work even in our short term interest successfully Suleiman, will have to "change colours" for his own people to gain power for the short term consolidation of power, and then return to authoritarian power gradually as the economic & political situation in Egypt worsens.
Is this in the long term interest of the United States or the Egyptian people ?.... I don't believe so ..In fact this is a desperation short term solution that could be detrimental to the long term interest of this nation.
The primary beneficiary of this short sighted fix is the nation of Israel, whose intransigence over the last years, along with Saudi funding of radical Islamic fundamentalism to prevent internal uprising, is the root cause of middle east unrest, one feeding on the other.
Had Suleiman not have been involved with the United States Torture & Rendition programs, he would have been a shoe in ...
I wonder why Israel supported this terrible regime after every thing the Jews suffered under Hitler. Mubarek is the reincarnation of Hitler in the modern world. I wonder US a strong supporter of Human rights and freedom for the oppressed around the world kept supporting people like Mubarek. It is clear our definition of Democracy is what ever fills the pockets of rich and powerful with mighty Dollars and keeps them in power is good.
So Suleiman is a pro-American, pro-Israel ally who heads the very secret police, and who most likely wrote the rules on how to torture and oppress his very own people- the Egyptians, that we and Israel approve to head the new, improved Egypt. Remember, as head of the secret service there, Suleiman was also personally responsible (as captain of that ship) for those peaceful protests turning violent and those peaceful protesters who were killed, maimed and injured.
I suppose that after the American Revolution, we should have consulted with England on who should lead our new nation of the USA and what laws should have governed us. That would have made alot of sense since we kicked their asses off our shores.
The Egyptians didnt protest to remove Mubarak, they protested to remove Mubarak AND his regime, which INCLUDES Sulieman ... the man responsible for all those Egyptian citizens (who opposed the dictatorship) "disappearing" the last few decades.
Apparently the USA and Israel want to see a new dictator that they can control.
Egyptians do NOT need a pro-American, pro_Israel interests leader who will rule with an iron fist ... they need a pro-Egyptian leader who believes in each citizens democratic and civil rights.
Just as we Americans told the world in 1776, this is our country and we will decide how to run it ... mind your own business and we can possibly be friends, The Egyptians must do the same.
Anyone claiming to be an American while subverting freedom, democracy and justice anywhere in this world and claiming to do so in the name of America's best interests NEEDS TO BE TRIED AS A TRAITOR to the USA and its foundation as an nation that lead the world towards democracy and freedom upon it's inception. Anyone claiming to be an American who defiantly spits upon our Constitution and all it stands for is not only NOT "upholding, defending and protecting", they are subverting it.
Sounds like we, as Americans, have aquired too many fleas and ticks while laying with dogs. tyhanks to our elected and appointed leaders Time for our politicians and leaders to begin wearing a flea and tick collar, snuggly fit so it doesnt fall off or get "tugged" off.
Sulieman is mubaraks toady. This is about what the Isrealis want ..It is NOT ABOUT ISRAEL..IT IS ABOUT THE EGYPTIAN PEOPLE! When you hear that someone will come out of the White House using their name saying such then believe it-- till then it is cowardly pandering to interests other than the people!
BBC is reporting that 260+ have been murdered in the streets by the secret police and this is being hidden from the Americans and Egyptians! NOT BY THE MILITARY!
It is NOT THE US's call.. support the Egyptian people --- forget the media pandering!
Bill---I wish that you were not right, but all indications are---you're spot on
......... im hoping the Egyptians keep the pressure on for an immediate turn over of power ....... the Army can run things until elections are held .........
Mischief9 – Well said. There is no advantage to the protesters to settle for anything less than a complete Mubarak exit. They know the Mubarak regime all too well, and if it hasn’t changed in 30 years it will not change in 6 months. Any pretence of appeasement exists only in the western media, and not on the streets of Cairo. The theme of Change, and Change Now, Yes We Can, is becoming a worldwide phenomenon.
You are correct Quenton. Pres Obama lit that burning flame of hope for change not only in America, but throughout the world. Thanks to wikileaks, those flames have begun to burn even stronger than before.
Although President Obama no longer appears to believe in it, it lit the candles of hope throughout our nation and the world ... and those flames of hope will not be extinquished, even if President Obama has given up on it.
Actually, I didn't see that the US is supporting anyone, at this time. Obama was tight-lipped about who America wants in power in Egypt. He said America wants a peaceful transition and democracy for the Egyptian people. The Egyptians want the US to stay out of it. Hopefully, whomever comes to power will be able to satisfy the Egyptian people and be a peaceful ally to Israel and the western nations. What we don't want are extremists!
Barack Obama needs to hold back and find out who is going to win in this struggle. Then he can choose a side and say he has been backing him all along.
Hopefully, once this political change evolves into the new government in Egypt, they will be a peaceful ally to all, NOT JUST ISRAEL. You suggest that before they even re-develop themselves as a nation, that they take sides in a war that hasnt happened yet. They dont need to be anyone's friend but their own, but it would be nice if they could be the "Switzerland" of the Mideast and be neutral friends to all their neighbors in this international world of ours.
The Muslim Brotherhood has spawned numerous radical organizations!!! Hamas is just one of the many incarnations. Why do we see this organization, who since 1923 has sought the destruction of secular, western, democratic regimes around the world, as a benign and benevolent force for change? The Muslim Brotherhood has but one purpose; Unite the Arab world against everything we stand for.
"The Muslim Brotherhood has but one purpose; Unite the Arab world against everything we stand for"
And that would be what? Big business running the country? Or maybe the military industrial complex creating another war somewhere to keep the economy running? Hey maybe its the legal drug problem that US faces or possibly the legal poisoning of your children with fast food because its cheaper than than real food.
There lays the problem, what does the US have that everyone else in the world wants? Freedom of speech? I guess it could get worse, the government could take that away which would really be horrible considering they don't listen to what the people have to say in the first place.
Bkay-3030789
Funny- its your ilk who are fighting the will of the Egyptian people. Whats the matter? why do you hate Muslim freedom? dont you want the Egyptian people to have fair and free elections??
I dont watch the zionist tinted media, there are plenty of other reliable sources which their main concern is the well being of the Egyptians, not the US or israel's.
Hamas, the only party ELECTED by the palestinians was created in response to Israels brutality in part. in the 80s israel prompted and helped the craetion of hamas to counterbalance Arafat incresing power in the palestinian territory. it backfired.

To everyone claiming that a religiously dominated government would be "dangerous" to everyone, REMEMBER THAT WELL as our own American politicians bible thump their way into elected offices.
No religion controlling any government is healthy for any nation, especially an Abrahamic religion (Judaic, Christian, Islamic or Baha'i). Since everyone is so opposed to a theocratic democracy ... why the hell are we supporting, defending, whoring ourselves and going broke over the most obnoxiously religious and ethnic apartheid one develped within those contested borders of Israel!!
I belive that to be untrue, the terrorists that you speak of left the M.B. because they were not radical enoug for them...
Pre. Mubarak has agreed to step down, I hope Egypt keeps its friends in the U.S. as together we are better, the bloodshed cannot continue, Egypt also needs to keep its financial house in order, chaos and longterm rebellion will hurt Egypt more than its citizens realize, whoever wins the Presidents Election in Egypt hopefully will remain friends of the U.S.
The USA trusts Mubarak? Perhaps our government may trust this dictator, but I doubt that a signifcant number of American people trust him...given his awful track record in Egypt over the past 30 years. Since the American people have such little say in foreign policy, I wish the media would make a clear distinction between our people and government bureaucrats. National positions should be determined by votes, not imposed by elected representatives who regularly do not represent the will of their constituents.
Anyone that is trusted by the US and Israel SHOULDNT BE TRUSTED BY THE EGYPTIAN PEOPLE.
Suleiman was the right hand of the brutal dictator. he was responsible for renditions and torture against his own people.
I wouldnt trust anyone who is trusted by israel. in order for the Egyptians to have true democracy, everyone must go.
this guy is a zionist mossad puppit.. I hope Egypt knows better than that!
America can trust Suleiman? Oh, you bet. Let's see, during his long watch: arrest, torture, disappearance of the bad guys (protesters, opposition political parties, journalists and the press, human rights workers, a handful of alleged terrorists, and...?); oh yes, and then there's the collaboration with Argentina, Iraq, Pakistan and North Korea to advance chemical weapons, long range missile technology and nuclear weapons; and did I mention he ran 'Torture Unlimited, Inc' to provide a convenient solution for the US and other clients for the past couple of decades torturing anybody accused of being a terrorist? Looks like a nice grandpa to me. Some one get him a rocking chair.
I agree "citizen-2301191" it is crazy how the media is painting the picture that for any one to be "good" they have to be accepted by the zionist Mossad! it is so funny Israel keeps saying that they are the only democracy in the middleeast but they neglect to tell you that they occupy obress and abuse 3 million palestinians! enough with the foreign aid that harbors and encourages all this abuse!
History tells us how the ruthless Zionist terrorists, who are supported by the West, terrorize, oppress, torture, rape and mass murder countless innocent and defenseless Palestinian, Egyptian, Lebanese and Syrian people since the day the British robbed Palestinians of their land and surrendered it to Zionist terrorists after the 2nd World War. And now the US regime and the Israeli regime of terror are using their puppet Hosni Mubarak to protect the interest of the Israeli regime of terror and cooperate with terrorist Zionist leaders to suppress and oppress Palestinian people. For example, Hosni Mubarak and his regime cooperate with the Israeli regime of terror impose their blockage on Gaza to starve Palestinian people.
Hosni Mubarak and his regime even oppress and terrorize Egyptian people because they refuse to be enslaved by Zionists and Zionist slaves. I am sure the US regime and the Israeli regime of terror would install a new US-Zionist puppet in Egypt who would behaves in a tyrannical manner to govern Egypt and serve the US and Israeli regimes not the people of Egypt. And the Egyptian people will resist the US-Zionist imperialism and the US-Zionist puppet in future.
Al-Ikhwan al-Muslimin is a political organization whose objectives are to overthrow the dictators of Egypt such as Hosni Mubarak and liberate Egypt from US-Zionist imperialism, confirm religious freedom and opinion and the right of gatherings and the right of peaceful demonstrations etc, respect fair and free elections, ensure the independence of judicial systems at all levels, and ensure that the army will stay clear of politic, etc. Therefore, we are not surprised to see the West and the Israeli regime of terror and Zionist media are scared about Muslim Brotherhood because they want their Zionist-US puppet dictator to govern Egypt on their behalf to ensure that Egypt would serve their interest and the Israeli regime of terror would able to oppress and terrorize innocent Palestinian people and terrorize other countries with impunity. Time has changed and the people of Egypt realize that they have to liberate Egypt from US-Zionist-Europe imperialism.
And if the Egyptians refuse, Omar Suleiman will torture them to death.

Government Denies Former US Attorney General Access to MB Trial

Egyptian security authorities in the military region of Huckstepp prevented the former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark from entering the military tribunal to monitor the twenty sixth session trying 40 Muslim Brotherhood (MB) leaders..
"Unfortunately Egyptian authorities are still preventing international observers from monitoring the military trial against Muslim Brotherhood leaders. They deprive the accused of a fair and open trial in front of a civil court" Clark says after preventing him from monitoring the 26th session in the seventh military trial in the history of the Muslim Brotherhood, the world"s biggest moderate Islamic group.
The former US Attorney General noted that he traveled to six other countries to monitor political trials there but he wasn"t prevented. " I traveled to Australia, South Africa, the Philippines, Thailand and Soviet Union and I wasn"t denied access by any security bodies in these countries", said the former US Attorney General.
"They do not know that governments that seek to hide what happens inside, and prevent observers from doing their duty, are actually dealing a death blow to justice and independence of the court", said the former US attorney General expressing his shock after he was denied access to the courthouse.
Clark added that:" being behind closed doors means that this military tribunal doesn"t only violate rights of these accused, but it also violates human rights because every human being has the right to stand trial in front of a fair judge and in a public court".
"It is so painful to see this happening in an Arab country as Egypt , as if its spiritual tongue says: I feel ashamed inside, therefore I do not want you to know this".
Saying that the world sees Egypt as a military dictatorship which is ruled by one junta after another, Clark added that Egypt is a signatory on the Human Rights Charter and its section related to civil and political rights that one of its articles state that the accused has the right to stand trial before a civil, fair, legal, independent and neutral court.
This article has been violated by Egypt after president Hosni Mubarak referred 40 Muslim Brotherhood leaders in case no. 2 of the year 2007 to the military tribunal.
It is worth mentioning that the state security in the Cairo Airport held Clark on Friday evening for three hours inside the airport without stating reasons for this measure. The former US Attorney General said commenting on this, that they want to harass him but he will continue to do what he sees as appropriate.
Sources familiar with the military tribunal declared that Ramsey Clark will announce something surprising that will affect the course of the case on Monday at noon in his press conference held in the Egyptian bar association.
MY CONCLUSION: Hosni Mubarak's regime and the Israeli regime of terror are the Nazi regimes of the 21st century.
Suleiman is not compldetely right about the 11 offshoots from the Moslem Brotherhood ( Ikhwaan el Mulimeen ) :
The MB and their large series of Front Organisations ( AlQaeeda/Zawahri etc ) are serial murderers and 9/11 is only a fraction of the evil acts they plan to carry out , and thus forcing us either to surrender or be blamed for " OVER-REACTING and being BAD AMERICANS etc "
We have Obama to blame for losing all our friends and allies abroad , in additon to strengthening our enemies from China to South America !
By the way , I speak fluent Arabic , although I have Blue eyes etc , an Englishman , unlike the one-sided CNN " Arabic " News Reporters who are misleading the US people ( as they did in the US Presidential Elections !
The US regime, the Israeli regime of terror and Zionist media hate Muslim Brotherhood (MB) so much because MB tries so hard to liberate Arab countries and Arabs from the ruthless US-Zionist imperialism and the US-Zionist dictators who govern Arab countries on behalf of the ruthless Zionist leaders of the Israel and USA and the dictattors cooperate with the Zionists to oppress and terrorize the people of Arab countries. They know that MB is trying so hard to introduce democracy to Arab countries and democracy would undermine the US-Zionist imperialism and influence in the Middle East.
The US regime, the Israeli regime of terror and Zionist media are desperate that they invent nonsensical fairy tales to slander, frame and demonize MB. For example, jabb1936 wrote "The MB and their large series of Front Organisations ( AlQaeeda/Zawahri etc ) are serial murderers and 9/11 is only a fraction of the evil acts". It is an irony that jabb1936 never give us any evidence to support his or her fairy tale ! And Zionist media also never show us any evidence to support their allegations but nonsensical hearsay !
'Al-Qaeda' means 'toilet' so it is nonsensical for a Muslim to call their organization a 'toilet' ! Therefore, Al-Qaeda does not exist but Al-CIAda and Al-MOSSADda that create and use Al-Qaeda to terrorize the world to pit the world against Muslims.
Suleiman is not completely right about the 11 offshoots from the Moslem Brotherhood ( Ikhwaan el Muslimeen ) :
The MB and their large series of Front Organisations ( AlQaeeda/Zawahri etc ) are serial murderers and 9/11 is only a fraction of the evil acts they plan to carry out , and thus forcing us either to surrender or be blamed for " OVER-REACTING and being BAD AMERICANS etc "
We have Obama to blame for losing all our friends and allies abroad , in addition to strengthening our enemies from China to South America !
By the way , I speak fluent Arabic , although I have Blue eyes etc ( an Englishman ) unlike the one-sided CNN " Arabic " News Reporters who are misleading the US people ( as they did in the US Presidential Elections with the help of ACORN etc )!
Good for you, jabb1936. You have blue eyes and speak Arabic - and Obama doesn't. Maybe that is why he is losing our 'friends'. We know what an Englishman is capable of formenting - from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe.
Omar is a crook belive me I know him.
I cannot be sure but am fairly positive that the USA president does not rule over Egypt and its people, yet Mr. Obama along with the Israeli govt. seem to be on the world stage and playing some apparent pivotal role in who should and will take over from Mubarak if and whenever he may step down. Did I miss something like an election whereby the people of Egypt appointed an external govt to engage in king making?
We are now hearing that Mr. Mubarak has accumulated considerable wealth during his reign, some 40-70 billion US dollars we are told. Did the US. govt supply these funds and if so would that not be US Taxpayer monies? Now this I do know... Nobody asked me if it was Ok for my contribution to the coffers of the USA be diverted to a dictator. Time for the USA to take care of its own and stop playing God on the worlds Monopoly board.
The US regime uses Hosni Mubarak to govern Egypt on the behalf of the US regime. The US regime also controls and manipulates foreign countries by intalling US puppets to govern them. Therefore, we are not surprised to know that the US regime had supported ruthless dictators such as Gen. Augusto Pinochet, Gen. Jorge Rafael Videla, Anastasio Somoza & sons, The Shah of Iran, Col. Hugo Banzer, Jonas Savimbi, Mobutu, Noriega, Trujillo, Fulgencio Batista, Gen. Branco etc.
And history tells us that the US regime would overthrow democraticlly elected governments if they refuse to serve the US regime:
The US regime will deliberately overthrow a democratically elected Egyptian government if it refuses to serve the interest of the Israeli regime of terror.

Thank you for posting, not only was your response thoughtful but informative. I came to this country in 1980 and loved it until I got to see it for what it is.
The fact is Muslim Brotherhood (MB) has nothing to do with AlQaeeda/Zawahri etc. The fact is Muslims create MB to liberate Arab countries from the US-Zionist dictators and introduce democracy to the people of Arab countries. On the contrary, Mossad and CIA create Al-Qaeda to serve Zionist interest and the US regime uses Al-Qaeda as a pretext to wage wars against Muslim countries and terrorize and mass murder innocent Muslim newborns, children, women, elderly people and unarmed men. For example, CIA's drones had killed countless innocent civilians in Pakistan, Afghanistan etc with impunity because CIA falsely believes that the newborns, children, women etc are 'al-Qaeda'.
Suleiman is the CIA hand picked man to succeed Mubarak
http://english.aljazeera.net/indepth/opinion/2011/02/201127114827382865.html
This should be left to the people of Egypt. Anyone endorsed by the US and Israel will be met with resistance. Lets keep our US big nose out, so we don't spawn more hate. We should cut all ties to Israel, this will also reduce the hatred aimed at my USA.
Why do our corporate media insist on looking at this transition from the perspective of the U.S. and Israel? It'll put the kiss of death on it. Mubarak (and Suleiman) are looked upon as Quislings, traitors,by the majority of Egyptians, in conspiring against the Palestinians, particularly of Gaza. Also, Suleiman has been convincingly implicated in our extraordinary renditions, i.e. torture. Case closed!
